Mmmmm roti bread

Yesterday we had a crack at making roti bread. All we used was flour and water. At first it was really sticky and was really hard to get off our fingers. We added more flour and then started to knead it. After about 15 minutes of resting time we put it into a pan and cooked it for 20 seconds on each side. Our first one was really doughy in the middle so we decided to roll it as thin as we could and it came out much better.

Making right choices

Over the last few weeks the Kahikatea team have been participating in the DARE programme with  Constable Emily. This programme is great as it gets the children to look at themselves and their actions and hopefully gets them thinking about things in different ways. Our last two sessions has had us looking at making right choices and that sometimes the best choice isn't always the easiest. Constable Emily has been giving us strategies to get us out of tricky situations.
Below is a few clips of some skits we did today.

AZONTO SOMERSET STYLES!

Well done Nehemia, Teina, Katherine, Maia, Kara, Colin and Harley!!! You guys have done a stunning job on your Digi awards entry for this year. You really have put Somerset out there and showed us all your flash moves. Kingstyn you did great at cutting and polishing and getting it all to go together. You really deserve to go far in the competition.

A big thank you to all people that were willing to take time out of their day to help the children achieve their goal at recreating a music video with their own flavour to it!!!!!

My class is awesome!!!!!

In the novel Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney we have just read a scene called the independent study. In the book it is essentially where the teacher gives the class a topic, leaves the room for an hour and comes back and looks at the work they have achieved. Taking a leaf out of the Kath Murdock book we decided to leave what we had planned for the morning and give it a go. We spoke about the task and also how it related to our U-ROCK values which is really what this activity is about. Most specifically it is about How well children can work together in a class setting with no teacher input.

I have to admit I was a little worried about how this could go but I was confident with how our class has been running this year and that they could achieve this task hands down, if they wished.

So, I left for 20 minutes. I did have a secret pair of eyes just in case there was a need for teacher assistance but it was not required. On returning after 20 minutes I arrived to children working cooperatively, heads down brainstorming and drawing, bouncing ideas off each other and from different groups. It was amazing to watch your class running like clockwork and the children not needing you to achieve their tasks. There is a great amount of pride I experienced when watching them. In hindsight I only wish I had set up a video in the corner just to show them and our followers how awesome they are and to show others that there is no barrier to children achieving when they put their minds to it.

Kahikatea's Silly Olympics

As a rev up to our inquiry unit this term the Kahikatea team decided to have a silly Olympics to coincide with the London Olympics. This is what we did. First, we split into 8 countries.

We made flags for those countries....
Then we made chants...

Then we had our Olympics. Some of the events were the tarp pull, the bucket run, the caterpillar crawl, dress up sprints and the Weet-Bix eating competition.

Diary of a wimpy kid & U-ROCK

We have just started reading this book as a class and are looking at it from a few different angles. We are looking at the writer Jeff Kinney's style and the way he has set out his book. We are also looking at the way he has used personal voice. We have also tied in our U-Rock values and we are doing character descriptions of the main characters.

Battle of the fast food giants!

As a class we have looked at the article posted on kiwi kids news about why my burger looks different from the advertisement. (Click Link) Based on this we have decided to do a "Target" styled approach on the three big fast food outlets in Palmerston North. McDonalds, Burger King and KFC. Our test will be looking at Four main areas; Presentation( how close it resembles its picture), value for money, nutrition and taste.

We will be looking at the cheeseburgers from McDonalds and Burger King and the Cheese Snack Burger from KFC. We will edit this post as we bring out our findings. .

This was our step process
We read and discussed the article e.g why they make their foods look like that? What is the point?

Then we watched TV3's Target programme to watch how they went about their product check.

We also made an opinion poll to see which burger we thought would win at the beginning.

Then we decided what  burgers we were going to test and what we would test them on.
We made up a table and gave each set of criteria a mark out of 5.This picture shows us the final winner.

Then Mr H, Sean and Misty went to go and pick up the burgers and some chocolate milkshakes!!!!

We marked our burgers according to our set criteria.

We then had our taste test and added up our results to get our winner.
